About Us

Chester Library Great Reading Area

Chester Library is a member of M.A.I.N., Inc. a consortium of 37 public libraries and the Morris County Library.

At the Chester Library, we lend books, magazines, large print books, audio books, DVDs, Blu-rays, music CDs, video games, museum passes, e-books, and downloadable audiobooks. We borrow materials from libraries across the USA upon request. We also offer a multitude of library programs for residents young and old.

Our staff will help you find the information you seek, either in person or by phone. Use our online catalog and online resources either in-person or from your home or office computer. With your Chester Library card, you have instant access to full-text periodical databases, research materials, literary criticism, language learning resources, and more. Additional  databases are available in the Library.

The library has one large meeting room and 2 group study rooms that can be reserved by going here. Additionally, there is a quiet study room with study carrels for use by those patrons who need absolute quiet to study or work. There are many large tables and study carrels on the main floor of the library for your use as well.

Borrowing & Returning Materials

Chester Library cards are available free of charge to anyone who resides or owns property or a business in either Chester Township or Chester Borough. In addition, courtesy privileges are extended to those who work or attend school in Chester. We honor cards from other libraries in M.A.I.N. and we also honor cards from libraries participating in Open Borrowing.

New materials are generally lent for two weeks and may be renewed if not requested by another patron. Books older than 6 months are lent for 4 weeks. New entertainment videos (feature films) are lent for two days. Materials may be returned to any library in the M.A.I.N. system. Late return fees of 15¢ per day are charged for all materials except new entertainment videos, which have a fine of $1 per day. The maximum fine on any item is $5.

Computer Access at the Library

The library has 15 public PCs with internet access. In addition, the library provides free wireless access, and 2 photocopiers (1 B&W, 1 color) that can be used by any member of the public. Our online resources are available on all PCs. Access to our resources, including our catalog and databases, is available to all library card holders via their own internet connections. M.A.I.N. Library Catalog is easy to use and, once you find a title, it can be reserved online.

When you get to the card catalog, log in before searching (or to access your account). You will need your library card number and your PIN. If you don’t know your PIN, call us at 879-7612 and we will give you some tips on retrieving your number. The Library will not give your PIN out over the telephone; you will need to visit the library if you cannot access your account.

We urge you to call the holding library to verify the availability of any item in the catalog prior to making a trip to pick up the item. Most libraries will check their shelves and hold the item for you. Alternatively, you may call us to ask that we have the item sent here for pick up.
